Stand Up Paddleboards

Stand Up Paddleboarding is an exciting alternative to conventional longboarding in that the surfer remains standing and moves through the water by paddling a long, canoe style paddle.

Typically more suitable for smaller summer beachbreak waves or a nicely lined up point or reef break, Stand Up Paddleboarding is also a great alternative to kayaking or canoeing on flat open waters such as protected harbours, inlets, inland lakes and even slow moving rivers.

What makes Stand Up Paddleboarding especially attractive is the fact that it's not only a new way to ride waves at your favorite break, but it's also a great activity and workout for Stand Up Paddle Surfthose of you who live near flat water such as a lake or around protected waters such as those of you who live on the East side of Vancouver Island or on the Lower Mainland.

Here at Island Longboards, we offer Canada's largest selection of Stand Up Paddleboards as well as all the accessories such as paddles, leashes, racks and rail tape.

Stand Up Paddleboarding is ancient form of surfing that started in Polynesia by surfing instructors who needed to manage large groups of beginner surfers as standing on the board gave them a higher view point increasing visibility of what was going on around them such as incoming swell. To begin with, this started with using a one bladed paddle standing on a normal length surfboard. This evolved to standing on longer surf boards and paddling with modified paddles in the 1940s and 1950s.

Many local surfers have converted because of the versatility of the new sport as well as the fact that Stand Up Paddleboarding offers the ability to catch more waves, offers a better view of incoming sets as well as the fact that a wave can be caught much earlier in formation because of the additional speed a Stand Up Paddleboarder can gather.
